The Chanute Daily Tribune, Thursday, June 1, 1916, Pg1
Volume XXV, Number 50

S. Z. ROTH
DIED TODAY
______
HE WAS THE LAST MAYOR OF
NEW CHICAGO.
______
Coming Here in 1871. He Erected
the First Brick Building in Neosho
County and Built Citys
Earliest Large Structures.
______

S. Z. Roth, a pioneer, who had much to do with the physical building of the city and was also actively associated with its municipal and commercial advancement, died at 8 o’clock this morning in the family home, 912 South Central avenue.
The funeral services will be held from the home at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. The Masonic lodge, of which he had long been a member, will have charge, and the sermon will be by Rev. George H. Mueller, rector of Grace Episcopal church. Interment will be beside the body of his wife, who died about five years ago.
Mr. Roth came to this vicinity in 1871, purchasing 480 acres of land, much of which is now included within the city limits. He was the last mayor of New Chicago, serving the final two years of that village’s existence befoore it was merged with Tioga into Chanute. Subsequently he was a member of the Chanute city council for eight years.
From the time of his arrival here Mr. Roth took a very active interest in the progress, advancement and improvement of the community. He erected the first brick building in Neosho county and put up nearly all the large structures first built in the city, including several school buildings, the old Presbyterian church, business blocks and many private residences.
He was the first man to plant evergreen trees here and cultivate them successfully. Trees of this species had previously been set out, but none had endured until Mr. Roth undertook their culture.
He was 83 years old last January 23, being born in Bureau county, Illinois. His parents were the first white couple married in that county. Mr. Roth’s father making a 60-mile trip through Indian country to obtain the marriage license.
Mr. Roth learned the trade of a brick mason. In 1852 he went to California, where he engaged in mining in the winter months and followed his trade in the summer, receiving from to a day.
After staying there three years, he returned to Illinois and worked as a brick mason until the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in the Union army as a member of Company B, Fifty-Second Illinois Infantry.
He fought in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth and many skirmishes and aided in driving Price’s army from Missouri. After three years of service he had risen to the rank of first lieutenant.
His three-year service ended, he was discharged. After remaining at home six months he raised a company, with which he went to the front as captain, and on account of meritorious service was promoted to the rank of major.
After his final discharge at the close of the war, he again worked at his trade in Illinois, coming from there to Kansas in 1871.
He was the father of four children, of whom two are living–Mrs. W. D. Keys and D. C. Roth, both of this city. His death was due to infirmities which he suffered because of his service in the army.
He was a member of the Masons, the United Workmen, and Elks and the Select Knights and Ladies.
For the past four or five years he had been going to California to spend the winter, returning here for the summer. The past winter, though, his health was so feeble that he did not make the western trip.

(Also 8 – 12 Jahre früher)

Aber so hatte ich auch eine gute Zeit, denn ich habe nach meinen Studium, in Berlin während des ersten Jobs, den Mauerfall erlebt. Und das möchte ich nicht missen.

Gruß
